NOTE: Pre-Season Administrative Role
The Camp Director is required to take on the role of Pre-Season Administrator, a separate hourly position mandated by New York State summer camp regulations. This role involves performing standard administrative and managerial tasks typically associated with the Camp Director position.
Compensation: Hourly, as per NYS law.
Timeframe: Not to exceed 130 hours prior to staff training without board approval.
Director Qualifications:
Must be at least 25 years old or have a bachelor’s degree to comply with the NYS Department of Health regulations.
Experience leading/supervising groups of children and/or teens in a recreational or school setting.
Driver’s License.
First Aid Certification (must have by staff training week).
Current certification in CPR/AED.
Pass a pre-employment background investigation.
Essential Job Functions:
Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of campers and staff, adhering to camp policies and Cayuga County/New York State Health Department regulations.
Supervise all staff, including Program Director, Cook, Health Director, Waterfront Director, counselors, and others.
Reside at camp during staff training and the camping program.
Lead staff training and oversee daily camp activities alongside key staff.
Coordinate check-ins for both resident and day campers, ensuring all required documentation is complete.
Communicate regularly with key personnel to address concerns and maintain smooth operations.
Foster a positive camp culture emphasizing safety, cooperation, and community.
Manage the Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program.

Ensure all Cayuga County and NYS Health Department requirements are met, including permits, reports, and safety plans.
Track and log time your work-time, submitting bi-weekly updates to the Camping Committee.
Present a complete program plan two months prior to camp.
Design and oversee safe, fun, and age-appropriate program activities.
Evaluate program delivery by staff and manage overall camp operations.
Assist in hosting the camp open house.
Follow state and local health and safety guidelines.
Work with the Waterfront Director to align programs with camp themes and mission.
Schedule guest speakers/educators for staff training within budget.
Prepare content for staff training and meetings.
Create and update parent communications, such as a welcome letter and packing list
Collaborate with the Board of Directors’ Camping Program Committee.
Additional Pre-Season Responsibilities:

Position Purpose:
The Camp Medical Director evaluates and treats campers and staff for minor injuries and illnesses, supervises and ensures implementation of medication policies and procedures at camp, keeps a log of Health Center visits, gives supportive advice to counselors and other camp staff if requested, and identifies health problems serious enough to require a physician’s attention.
Qualifications (Minimum Education and Experience):
Must have one of the following professional certifications: Physician, nurse practitioner, registered nurse (RN), licensed practical nurse, emergency medical technician (EMT), certified first responder or other certification deemed acceptable by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH).

Qualifications (Minimum qualifications and experience)
• At least 21 years of age
• Possess current certification in a training course for lifeguard supervision and management as described in this link.

• Minimum of: − one season of previous experience as a camp Waterfront Director at a New York State camp; or − two seasons of previous experience consisting of at least 12 weeks as a children’s camp lifeguard which had more than one lifeguard supervising it at a time; or − 18 weeks of previous experience as a lifeguard at a swimming pool or bathing beach, which had more than one lifeguard supervising it at a time.
• Hold an accepted and current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificate as listed on the Fact Sheet entitled “Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification for NYS Children’s Camps and NYS Bathing Facilities”
• Annually review and document the review of the camp’s safety plan for swimming.
Essential Job Functions:
The Waterfront Director is responsible for overseeing all swimming activities at the camp’s pools and bathing beaches. This includes supervising lifeguards and staff, ensuring the safety plan is followed, and responding to emergencies.
If certified as a Lifeguard, the Waterfront Director may also serve as a lifeguard during swimming activities. They will implement and supervise the buddy system or other approved bather accountability systems.
Additionally, the Waterfront Director will participate in and lead camp activities as assigned, assist with counselor breaks, and complete any other duties as required by the Camp Director.
1. Plan, direct, and supervise a safe and fun waterfront program
• Write (with the help of life guards) lesson plans that meet camp goals
• Evaluate aquatic abilities of campers and staff
• Deliver creative swim and watercraft program activities
• Determine alternate activities in the event the waterfront is closed
• Assess Campers Swimming Ability per evaluate bather swimming ability using standards and criteria
• Categorize campers’ ability as either a non-swimmer or swimmer. A record of each camper’s swimming evaluation including the camper’s full name, date of test and their assessed ability will be maintained at the camp.
2. Train and supervise waterfront staff
• Assist in the planning and implementation of staff training
• Train waterfront and counseling staff in their waterfront responsibilities
• Verify skills of all waterfront lifeguards
• Supervise waterfront staff to provide a safe and high-quality program
• Supervise the waterfront staff evaluation process
• Implement the scheduling of waterfront staff
• Directly supervise other aquatic staff
3. Manage the physical facilities and equipment in the waterfront program area
• Set up waterfront area prior to and during staff training
• Teach and monitor proper use of equipment
• Conduct initial and end-of-season inventory, and store equipment for safety
• Check equipment, and make (or file for) repairs
• Conduct a daily check of equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair
• Submit orders for equipment and supplies when needed, ensuring timely arrival of materials
• Survey waterfront area daily, and keep the area free of hazards and debris
4. Participate as a member of the camp management team to plan, direct, and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions
• Work with Director and other key staff members to develop a program curriculum, awards programs, and leadership programs.
• Assist in the planning of any special events on or near the waterfront.
• Participate in management and staff meetings.
Other Job Duties:
Participate enthusiastically in camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned. Any other duties required by Camp Director.
Relationships:
There are coordinated efforts in camp between all the key program area directors such as environmental education, sports, arts, and others. Most often the health care and emergency plan outline the relationship between the Health Officer and the Waterfront Director and the waterfront staff for emergency management and care. It is important to maintain clear and regular communications with other staff member to keep campers safe. Position Purpose:
To further the mission of the camp by providing supervision and ensuring a safe environment at the camp’s waterfront activities. Assist in the management of the physical operation of the waterfront facilities and equipment. Lead campers in waterfront activities including canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Supervise and serve as a lifeguard at all waterfront activities.
- Provide surveillance during aquatic activities to help prevent and manage injuries.
- Provide rescues as needed.
- Utilize first aid and CPR and other emergency management services as needed.
- Understand and implement appropriate responses to changes in water conditions or weather conditions affecting the waterfront.
- Assist Waterfront Director in determining aquatics abilities of campers and staff.
2. Assist Aquatics Director in program areas such as swimming and boating.
- Ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures while at the waterfront.
- Assist in the delivery and supervision of all water activities and special events at the waterfront.
3. Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in the waterfront program area.

Position Purpose:

Activities include arts and crafts, sports including swimming, nature study, songs, and team building. Camp counselors are also responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of campers. Camp counselors have a knack for creating an accepting, positive, and wholesome environment.
Qualifications:
• High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required
• 1 year of experience supervising and working with children, preferably as a camp counselor or teacher
• Ability to pass a background check
• General mobility including, but not limited, to walking, kneeling, and standing, ability to lift/move up to 50 pounds.
• Proven ability to maintain a safe environment for others in adherence with provided protocol and standards
• Ability to organize, and lead activities for large groups of children
Essential Job Functions:
• Ensure a group of assigned campers is supervised and safe
• Utilize appropriate behavior management techniques
• Organize and lead a variety of activities that are age-appropriate in arts, crafts, recreation, nature, music, and/or team building.
• Model good behavior for campers as it relates to sportsmanship, manners, and respectfulness
• Identify teachable moments and capitalize on them
• Perform all responsibilities in a manner that guarantees the safety of campers
• Facilitate and encourage participation in camp activities
• Interact with parents in a professional and polite manner
• To serve as a cabin counselor providing daytime and overnight supervision of campers
Relationships:
• It is important to maintain clear and regular communications with other staff members to keep campers safe. In the case of disagreements, personal or work-related, seek assistance from the Camp Directors.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Desire and ability to work with children outdoors in varied conditions
• General knowledge of natural history, biology, ecology, sports, drama, music, and/or arts and related fields helpful
• Ability to take everyday moments and turn them into learning experiences
Physical Aspects of the Position:
• Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity
• Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers
• Endurance including standing, walking, or hiking, some bending, stooping, and stretching
• Verbal communication to groups of campers in an outdoor setting
• Willingness and ability to live in a rustic camp setting
• Work irregular hours delivering programs in the environment available
• Proven ability to maintain a safe environment for others in adherence with provided protocol and standards
• Ability to organize, and lead activities for large groups of children
